Conflicting claims exist regarding pathogen growth in raw milk. So, who do You believe!?

When Raw milk samples were inoculated with foodborne pathogens and independent studies were conducted, they showed the suppression of the growth of major bacterial pathogens at proper refrigeration temperatures!

Duplicate samples of hygienic raw milk produced for direct human consumption by the Raw Milk Institute (RAWMI) were inoculated with one of two initial levels of each of the 4 pathogens and then kept properly refrigerated. 3 out of 4 Pathogens did not grow in the refrigerated milk!

RAWMI has been instrumental in proving the Benefits of Raw Milk.

Unfortunately, for us here in Canada, Canada is the only G7 Country that has chosen to outlaw the sale of all Raw Milk! Why? (That is a Great Question). A question best posed to Your local Member of Parliament.

Consumers Need To Organize and Prioritize

Two Goats Milking At Briden Farm

We are often asked about selling milk, dairy, pork, eggs, and other farm products.

Joel Salatin has a Book entitled “Everything I want to do is Illegal”

Unfortunately that is true of about everyone brave, or crazy enough to run a homestead, or farm, or homesteading farm, these days!

Many Homesteaders and Farmers do what they can. Some strictly trying to adhere to obscure, difficult to understand and interpret Government Regulations while others try to fly under the radar. Either way it is very counterproductive.

Sadly, these would be Providers accomplish little when it comes to influencing Government and They find it difficult to meet consumer demands and sully those needs. So, it’s been on my mind for sometime that we may be putting the cart before the horse!

What if, instead of a handful of small Homesteads operators and small scale Farmers seeking change, the Consumers acted instead. First of all, the Consumer base is 10 to 100, perhaps even 1000, times larger than the would be providers. So, that means that instead of a small handful of Homesteaders and Small Scale Farmers trying to influence Government, a larger more concerning number of Voters would be more noticeable! Political Power comes in numbers!

When it comes to Milking Goats

Eve Producing Milk At Briden Farm

When it comes to Milking Goats, I really enjoy it! At least I do when the Doe is a willing participant! Our old Saanen Doe, Eve really enjoys being milked. Whereas Nanna, our Nigerian Dwarf Goat, has never been quite sure! We’ve had some over the years that just didn’t want to be touched!

I prefer milking by hand, while I know some others prefer machine. I am sort of thankful that I’ve never had over one or two goats to milk at the same time! I think if I had too many I might be tempted to turn to using a milking machine! Not sure though!

Although I may find out, we currently have 4 Does, and they just had the visit of a Young Buck for a month and a half! So, come July, we potentially could have four freshen, that would mean probably having four goats to milk! It could also mean our having anywhere from 4 to 14 kids! Not likely to have over 5-8 kids though.

I know I look forward to being back in milk though, we enjoy making cheese, yogurt, buttermilk and whey! The extra will go to our Berkshire Pigs, Larry, Curly, and Moe!

Curious, do you prefer milking by hand?

We’re Finally Producing Milk At Briden Farm

Eve Producing Milk At Briden Farm

When we first got our Nigerian Dwarf Goats, last August we got two Does and one had a 6 week old Kid. Nanna, Momma, and Snow White. Nanna was supposed to be bred and due the end of September 2020. She kept us guessing but she was not bred, therefore produced no milk. Momma was producing Milk, but only for her Kid, Snow White, and no matter what we tried we just couldn’t milk Her!

So, unfortunately we’ve been feeding three goats for nearly seven months with little to show for it, other than the friendship of three goats!

Now, Nanna is bred and due to freshen within the next two to three weeks and Momma is also due to have her kids a little later in the Spring. While a Goat usually has Milk when she has kids, that milk often gets used by her kids for at least the first month or two. So, that means still no milk for us from them till, probably June! Unless of course we get yet another Goat! Not really planning that!

Yet, when I first saw our new Goat! That’s right, we now have A New Goat at Briden Farm! So, when I first saw our new Goat, Eve, it was love at first sight! Not only is she a beautiful girl, even though she hasn’t been bred in over two years, she’s still producing over a litre of quality milk everyday! So, now, We’re Finally Producing Milk At Briden Farm!

Which means we’ll now be able to have farm fresh milk, cheese, and butter, here at Briden Farm where the Tea is Always On and The Coffee is not far behind! We invite You to come visit, leave your fears behind and come have fun at the Farm! Come spend time with our animals and relax walking our woodland trails. For more info phone 902-907-0770.
