Laying Out New Pasture At Briden Farm

Fencing New Pasture

This photo, or should I say this amalgamation of three photos shows the appropriate layout of the new pasture for our Nigerian Dwarf Goats. Or at least the Does, Snow White, Momma, and Nanna!

Till now, they’ve enjoyed having their Pasture on the Hillside in two rotational areas. However those have been quite well browsed upon and the simple fact is the Goats are bored of that area. when they get bored, they get out of the pasture. The simple truth is we don’t have a lot of great fencing! However, we’re blessed because, although the Girls could get out anytime, they only escape when they get bored!

So the new area will provide them at least a few weeks of entertainment and also some fresh new browse. It’s mostly flat ground directly behind the house and while smaller, only about 40 x 70’ it’ll provide an easy to watch, gentler area for the time Nanna and Momma move into their Kidding season. Nanna is due the end of March and Momma the first of May.

It also can be expanded to the Hillside on an untouched area with another approximate 80×80’ Square. So, for the next three weeks or so, till Momma freshens (gives birth to her kids), we’ll leave them in the smaller pasture.

Once she  freshens we’ll expand it while she’s spending time inside with her kids. We’ll make it so it can be split in two. So when Nanna comes out with her kids they can be in the first section and Momma and Snow White can be in the Hillside area. That is till Momma freshens the first of May, then we’ll rotate it.

Up to an Inch of Snow They Said

Just an Inch of Snow

Actually they said 2-4 cm, and up to 10 Celsius, I think!

However, this is what it looked like here at Briden Farm at 8am this morning when it was still -4 C and we had at least 4-6 inches of snow on the ground!

We really can’t complain though, this has been an easy Winter, and this was the first time I’ve really had to do chores, like feeding and watering our Chickens and Nigerian Dwarf Goats, in Winter conditions.

Not sure what it’s like over in Annapolis County, but here, on our side of Bear River in Digby County it’s blustering and yes, it’s starting to turn to rain! Which means it’s just going to be a mess!

Our Nigerian Dwarf Goats don’t mind it much, they just stay in and munch on their goodies and enjoy their hay and warm beds. Even the Bucks are quite content to laze around. The chickens are another story though, thy like to be outside, picking and scratching and sneaking off to lay their eggs in the banana boxes in the carport! Maybe they’ll actually lay their eggs in their nest boxes in the Coop today!

in any case, it seems we’re in for a bit of warm weather this week, so They’ll all get to spend time outside later in the week, if not today.

Today, I think we’ll stay near the wood stove, here at Briden Farm where the Tea is Always On and the Coffee is not far behind! 😉

In the Pasture with Our Nigerian Dwarf Goats

In the Pasture with our Nigerian Dwarf Goats at Briden Farm, overlooking the Head of The Tide in Bear River, Nova Scotia.

Nanna, Momma, and Snow White (Momma’s Daughter), keep us entertained. We often get to see our Goats playing, but seldom get the best play on tape! Today we captured a little, but it’s one reason we invite You to come visit us at Briden Farm, where the Tea is always On and the Coffee is not far behind! We have excellent Tea, made on the Wood Stove, and Coffee from Sissiboo Coffee Roasters here in the Village of Bear River, Nova Scotia.
