Good afternoon from Briden Farm.
Today has been one of those quieter days that reminds me just how much there is to be thankful for.
Thirty-two years ago today, I took my last drink of alcohol.
There have been many seasons since then—some filled with joy, others with heartache, and more than a few that tested my resolve. Through it all, I’ve been blessed with another day, another sunrise, and another opportunity to keep moving forward.
For that, I’m deeply grateful.
Thank you, God.
Thank you, Creator.
This morning began much like most mornings here at Briden Farm. After breakfast, hanging yesterday’s laundry on the line, and posting today’s headlines for Country Air Radio, I headed over to the barn side of the farm.
The rabbits were doing well.
The goats were happy.
The quail were content.
The sheep had settled beautifully into their new Bell Road Pasture after yesterday’s big move.
I milked Patsy, who has been just a little finicky lately, making sure she was well milked out so she stays comfortable and healthy. With only her daughter Rose nursing, she still has plenty of milk to spare, and keeping her healthy is always the priority.
I also walked back to the Bell Road Pasture to check that the flock had plenty of water. While I was there, I staged the fencing for Tuesday’s next move within the pasture. One advantage of rotational grazing is that there’s always another fresh paddock waiting just ahead.
After returning Lisa’s hand cart and making the walk home with Bo—who handled another long morning remarkably well—it was time for a simple lunch of a roast pork sandwich and, of course, a good cup of tea.
I had every intention of taking a nap this afternoon.
As often happens…
That didn’t happen.
Instead, I finished the home chores, looking after the chickens, broodies and chicks, the pigs, Maple and Brook.
Interestingly, once I got moving again, I actually felt better. Sometimes it’s simply a matter of pacing yourself and listening to your body. It turns out I was tired—but perhaps not quite as tired as I thought.
As the chores wound down this afternoon, another thought crossed my mind.
If I had a little truck sitting in the yard, I think I’d probably go for a drive. Maybe visit a friend. Maybe simply enjoy the freedom of the open road.
Instead, I think I’ll do something simpler.
I may just walk down into the village, check the mailbox—even though there won’t be any Saturday mail—and perhaps stop into the store for a few minutes to say hello.
Sometimes that’s enough.
One thing farming has taught me is that a rich life isn’t always measured by big moments.
Sometimes it’s measured by healthy animals.
A good cup of tea.
A quiet walk.
A friendly conversation.
Or simply taking a moment to stop and give thanks.
Thirty-two years ago, I made a decision that changed the direction of my life.
Today, I quietly celebrate that decision.
And then…
Tomorrow, I’ll get up and do it all again.
From all of us here at Briden Farm, thank you for following along on this journey.
Have a wonderful evening, and may God bless. 🌿🐑🍵
